4 things you must know to get iOS 9 for your iPhone or iPad

iOS 9 has a ton of cool features. Though your device will get a notification to update by displaying a little red circle on the top-right corner of your Settings app, you should know something to make your updating more smoothly.

1. Compatibility
iOS 9 is compatible with devices as old as the iPhone 4s, iPad 2, iPad mini, and 5th generation iPod touch. Newer models are also compatible. Before the updating, you should learn whether your iPhone/iPad is supported by the new OS. iOS 9 is compatible with these devices.

2. Back up your data
It’s always a good idea to back up your iPhone before updating. There are two ways to backup your iPhone.
(1) Backing up via iCloud, go to Settings > iCloud > Backup. Next, make sure “iCloud Backup” is turned on, and hit “Back Up Now”. Please keep in mind that you need to be connected to Wi-Fi to do this. To check if the back up worked, you can go to Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage, then choose your iPhone. You’ll see your most recent back up.
(2) Backing up your iPhone through your computer, connect your iPhone and open iTunes. Next go to File > Devices > Transfer Purchases, and when that’s done go to File > Devices > Back Up. To check what data is and isn’t backed up, you can use this easy iPhone extractor to view.

3. Storage
You don’t need as much free space to update. iOS 9 only takes up 1.3GB. To find out which apps are eating all of your precious storage go to Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage. You can delete all those apps you never use, and transfer your media files to your computer.

4. Update time and way
Starting Wednesday, September 16, you’ll have two ways to update to iOS 9.
(1) Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Download and Install. Please follow its instruction and restart when installation is finished.
(2) Update using iTunes. To do this make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed, then plug your iPhone into your computer. When your iPhone pops up in iTunes, look for the Summary box. Hit the “Check for update” button, then download and update.
